The castle is located near the mouth of the Ionian Sea outflow of the Vivari canal.
It was built in the years 1807-1808 by Ali Pashe Tepelena, to stop the landing of the French army of Corfu, which demanded from Ali the surrender of Butrint. The fortified walls are built of small stones connected with limestone. The western side facing the sea has been carefully worked, with stones carved in more or less quadrangular shapes. The first and second towers were covered with conical roofs with cones.
