The archaeological site of Pyrgos Ragios is located 10 km North of the city of Igoumenitsa. He occupies the low hill top in the middle of the Kastrin-Kastrin plain, near the old estuary of the river Kalamas. The position presents timeless use from the Middle Palaeolithic period to the times of Ottoman domination.
In the 5th century. e.g. The hill was fortified with a powerful wall, which is preserved today in a particularly good condition, enclosing an area of three acres. In the larger part of the wall is constructed according to the isonous guide system (use of rectangular boulders), which is also an element for dating its construction in the 5th century. e.g. From the research so far it is considered that the fortress was part of the “Corfiot Peria”, the military base that, with the historical, Historis, the Kerkylans founded on the Thesprotic Coasts in the Peloponnesian War, ensuring the control of the Northern Marine Narrow of Corfu and the supervision of the hinterland within a radius of several kilometers. During the Ottoman period, space was systematically inhabited, as indicated by the large number of orchard and walls from a dry stone. At the same time, on the northern tower of ancient fortification, a two-storey building was built, the so-called tower, to which the modern name is due. The tower belongs to the architectural type of “Kulias” (“Kula”), which, like the tower, was particularly widespread in the wider Balkan area during the Ottoman period. It is a military building, which served as an observatory and for the accommodation of the guard of the area of the region. Findings from the inquiries to the archaeological site of Pyrgos Pyrgos are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa. Among these include Middle Palaeolithic and Neolithic Age, Vegetables of the Bronze Age, Chalina Archaic Age, Ceramics, Currencies and Other Microads (Arrow Peaks, Polybored Market Bills, etc.) of the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman Years , as well as everyday objects from the newest period of habitation.
